EventsFamily Strengthening Award 2005Minnesota Indian Women's Resource Center is honored to be the recipient of the United Neighborhood Centers of America and the Annie E. Casey Foundation Family Strengthening Award 2005, which is given to create an education network and peer learning opportunities among its members regarding best practices in family strengthening programs. Grant to help families impacted by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD)Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center, accepted a $77,000 grant from Cummins Power Generation, a Fridley-based division of Cummins, Inc., a manufacturer of diesel engines and power generation systems. This grant supports that mission by the development and piloting of a culturally specific parenting curriculum to address fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) and its serious impact in Native American communities. The Native American Parenting Traditions Revisited (NAPTR), a curriculum/toolkit, will increase the development of positive family management skills for American Indian parents who may be affected by FASD resulting in better outcomes for families and their children in school. The curriculum/toolkit will also increase the awareness of the impact of pre-natal alcohol exposure and anticipates a reduction in FASD births. Long term outcomes of this program anticipate a model easily replicated on a national scale for American Indians in rural and urban areas from a variety of tribal backgrounds.
